A band teacher or student sent you here. First 5 Notes is a web app at first5notes.virtunity.io where beginning band students learn their first notes: they read a note, learn its fingering, then play it while the browser listens for the pitch. This page covers the microphone, the web addresses to allow, and what the app collects. The First 5 Notes iPhone app is separate and is not covered here.

Let the microphone through on managed Chromebooks

Students play into the microphone so the app can hear which note came out. If your Chrome policy turns audio input off, students see a message asking them to allow the microphone, and they cannot change that setting themselves.

1. In the Google Admin console, go to Devices > Chrome > Settings > Users & browsers and select the students’ organizational unit.
2. Under Hardware, add this exact address to Audio input allowed URLs: https://first5notes.virtunity.io
3. Save. That address can then use the microphone without a prompt, even while audio input stays off for other sites.
4. To confirm, open chrome://policy on a student Chromebook, choose Reload policies, and look for AudioCaptureAllowedUrls. Students may need to reload First 5 Notes afterward.

If you manage Chrome another way, the policy names are AudioCaptureAllowed and AudioCaptureAllowedUrls. Managed guest sessions have their own copy of these settings.

Microphone audio is analyzed on the device as the student plays. It is never recorded, saved, or uploaded.

Web addresses to allow

  Always. The app, its lesson audio and fingering images, and the optional problem-report form.

• www.virtunity.io

  Always. Anonymous counts and error reports, plus the account, purchase, and program-code checks.

• identitytoolkit.googleapis.com, securetoken.googleapis.com, firestore.googleapis.com, and a sign-in helper page on firebaseapp.com

  Parent or program sign-in only. Google Firebase, used when a parent signs in or a student enters a band program's shared code.

• checkout.stripe.com

  Card purchase only. An adult's card checkout. Students do not need it.

• apps.apple.com

  If tapped. The link to the First 5 Notes iPhone app.

Everything uses HTTPS on port 443. The app loads no advertising, outside fonts, tag managers, third-party analytics, or outside scripts.

Some districts block every .io address. You do not need to allow the whole suffix: the two addresses marked Always cover ordinary classroom use, and an exception for *.virtunity.io covers them too.

What the app collects

• The free practice activities do not require a name, email, or account. Student practice progress stays in the browser on the device, and we never see it.
• The app sends a few anonymous counts: one session start per browser-tab journey, one first open for each instrument page visited, one count each time an arcade game opens, naming the game and instrument, and one tagged arrival when a student comes from one of our tagged links. These counts contain no name, email, account, notes played, progress, or microphone audio.
• If something breaks, such as a microphone the browser blocked, the app sends one short error report: the same anonymous journey id, the instrument, the screen and file involved, the browser window size, and a brief error message. It contains no name, email, account, notes played, progress, or microphone audio.
• Students whose band program provides access can use a shared program code and passphrase without giving us a name or email. A parent account is optional and is used only to buy and restore a purchase.
• A report is optional. The email field is for a teacher or parent who wants a reply. The report goes to a private issue tracker (GitHub) and a support mailbox (Resend). We keep it until 90 days after the issue closes. Please do not include names.
• No advertising. No advertising profiles. No tracking cookies. No tracking of an individual student from one device to another. No sale of personal information.
