First 5 Notes provides free practice for the first five notes of a band instrument and optional paid full-range modules. By using it you agree to these terms.
Use of the app
The first five notes are free for personal, educational use and require no account. A parent account is required only for website purchases and restoring those website purchases in another browser or on iOS. A student covered by a participating band program may use the shared program code and passphrase provided by the program in the web app instead. First 5 Notes Classroom works in the browser and in the iPhone app. In the iPhone app (version 1.2 and later), a student or co-teacher taps Use a school program code and enters the program code and passphrase to unlock the full-range content covered by an active Classroom purchase. See our Privacy page. Don’t misuse the app, attempt to disrupt it, or copy its content for redistribution.
Not a substitute for a teacher
The app provides expected-note confirmation while you play. Pitch detection is approximate and can be affected by room noise and device microphones. Always follow your band director or teacher’s guidance, especially on embouchure, posture, and instrument care.
Content
Instrument reference sounds include edited recordings by Philharmonia musicians. Learn about the original Philharmonia sound library.
Fingering diagrams and exercises are original to First 5 Notes. All content is provided “as is” without warranties of any kind.
Purchases
Notes beyond the first five can be unlocked with a one-time website purchase through Stripe or an eligible in-app purchase through Apple. Website purchases belong to the signed-in parent account. App Store purchases remain governed by Apple and can be restored separately. Prices and the content included are shown before confirmation.
Prices exclude applicable sales, use, lease transaction, and similar taxes, which Virtunity will collect when required by law; purchasers must provide accurate billing and software-use information and any applicable exemption documentation before purchase.
Band program access
First 5 Notes Classroom costs $99 as a one-time payment for a 12-month term. It covers one band program at one school and may be used by unlimited students enrolled in that program and their co-teachers. It unlocks every full-range module currently available in First 5 Notes. Access does not renew automatically.
An invoice request does not activate access. For card checkout, the 12-month term begins when Stripe confirms full payment and Virtunity creates the program. For an invoice or another approved payment method, the term begins when Virtunity independently confirms full payment and activates the program.
Prices exclude applicable sales, use, lease transaction, and similar taxes, which Virtunity will collect when required by law; purchasers must provide accurate billing and software-use information and any applicable exemption documentation before purchase.
The purchaser must be an adult authorized by the school or organization. After verified payment, the purchaser receives a single-use setup link that expires after 30 days and chooses one shared passphrase. Virtunity stores only a slow salted hash of the passphrase, not the passphrase itself. The program code and passphrase may be shared only with enrolled students and co-teachers in the covered program and may not be posted publicly, resold, or shared with another school or program. Credential rotation and revocation are available through Virtunity support.
No roster upload or individual student account is required for this shared credential. Students do not provide a name or email address. First Five Notes does not display advertising or create advertising profiles from Classroom use. We do not create individual student profiles, track individual students from one device to another, or create student-level practice analytics for this credential. Practice progress remains on each device. Microphone audio is analyzed on your device as you play and is never recorded, saved, or uploaded. Limited aggregate website and security events may be processed as described in the Privacy Policy, but they are not associated with a named student.
The term expires automatically after 12 months and does not renew automatically. There is currently no self-service renewal or extension; contact support before expiration to arrange continued access. Expiration is enforced at the stated time. A mid-term revocation or full refund may take up to 24 hours to reach a device that is already offline. We may revoke access for a full refund, payment dispute, payment reversal, material credential misuse, security risk, or a violation of these terms. A partial refund does not automatically end access and may be reviewed by Virtunity support.
